Unwanted hair growth is one of the most common problems and affects both sexes equally

What are dermatological lasers and how do they work?

Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by the stimulated Emission of radiation. The basic principle on which the use of the laser for the destruction of unwanted hair growth is based is the principle of selective photothermolysis, which consists in the selective absorption of the laser beam by the melanin of the hair.

So the first clinical element that is evaluated is the color of the hair.

With the absorption of the laser beam by the melanin of the hair, we have a conversion of the light energy into thermal energy. When the temperature inside the hair follicle rises to 70 degrees, the hair regeneration centers are destroyed and a reduction in hair growth is achieved. Of all the hairs, only those found in the regrowth phase are biologically active. They contain more melanin, so they absorb more laser and can be damaged – about 15% is damaged per session. This explains why a certain number of sessions are required to complete the treatment. In 1997, the FDA approved the use of lasers in the fight against unwanted hair growth.

The types of laser used in hair removal are:

  • Ruby laser (694nm)
  • Alexandrite laser (755nm)
  • Diode laser (810nm)
  • Neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd: YAG laser) 1064nm

What is the best hair removal method and why?

Of the existing methods, laser hair removal is the best, because it is safe, effective and well accepted by the patient. But we should not forget that modern lasers are approved by the FDA for long-term epilation and not for permanent results.

Is laser hair removal painful?

the sophisticated laser systems of the third generation are equipped with cooling systems, cold air, cryogen, cryogel, which make the treatment extremely acceptable.

What is the difference between laser and photolysis? How will I know if the machine is laser or photolysis?

The laser is a monochromatic beam of light, while the pulsed light of photolysis is a polychromatic light emission. Regarding its mode of action, the laser destroys the hair based on the principles of selective photothermolysis, while in photolysis we have non-specific thermal damage to the hair. According to the medical association, the alexandrite laser should always be done in an approved dermatology clinic, while any other laser, like photolysis, can also be done in an aesthetic institute.

Can I do laser all the months of the year?

During the summer season and the first autumn months, we should be extremely careful on tanned skins and particularly photo-exposed areas.
When can I start lasering?

It is applied in adolescence, in cases of hirsutism (intense hyperhair in visible places) to avoid social or psychological problems in people who do intense sports activity (swimming, football). In these cases the treatment can be extended to covered areas. Care is always required in its application and proper information and consent of the guardian is required.

What should I do before and after each session?

BEFORE: You are given a detailed and realistic briefing about the application by our specialist consultants. We take a medical history. We pay attention to people taking photosensitizing drugs or a history of vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic eczema, herpes and keloids and clearly in the first 4 months of pregnancy and in childbirth. Hormonal control is performed in women to exclude a hormonal substrate. Clinical examination of the area to rule out the presence of active dermatological disease or dysplastic nevi.

AFTER: We apply topical cortisol cream and instructions are given to avoid hot baths, sun exposure for two days and use sunscreen during periods of intense sunshine.

Sessions can be held even in the summer!

The process of getting rid of unwanted hair involves regular repeat sessions, the number of which cannot be predetermined from the beginning. The data, from our experience and the international literature, show that after 6 sessions a significant improvement, of the order of 80% – 85%, reduction of terminal hairs has been achieved. From there, you will determine the aesthetic result that satisfies you and the repeat sessions that will be needed.

Depilation of areas such as the face and neck in women, the back in men as well as areas with stronger hormone-dependent hair growth require a greater number of sessions.
